Asian Games: Eain Yow, Sivasangari bag squash gold medals

National squash players Ng Eain Yow and S Sivasangari have bagged the Asian Games men’s and women’s singles gold medals respectively.

Bernama reported that Sivasangari, 24, narrowly beat Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk 8-11, 15-13, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10 in a 64-minute battle to clinch the title.

Sivasangari, who recovered from a horrific road accident last year, also won the women’s team gold on Saturday.

She reportedly told reporters that her ordeal with the accident had strengthened her mental fortitude and fighting spirit.

“I have quite improved on the mental side, so I think that’s why I made it today. We both are physically fit and have the tactics, but mentally I did slightly better today,” Bernama quoted her as saying.

Meanwhile, the national newswire reported that Ng won the men’s singles gold medal after defeating India’s Saurav Ghosal 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 in a 72-minute battle.

Saurav had previously bested Ng during the men’s team semi-finals last week.

“I just stayed stronger than last week and made him feel tired to secure this win. I am very happy to give this medal to my beloved country,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Syafiq Mohd Kamal-Aifa Azmanhad reportedly took silver in the mixed doubles event today.

Malaysia’s medal tally is currently at five gold, six silver, and 17 bronze medals, placing it 14th in the medal standings for a total of 28 medals.

Malaysia’s contingent is aiming for 27 medals in the games being held in Hangzhou, China.
