T'ganu to strengthen 'syariah-friendly' dress code for Muslim tourists

The Terengganu government will be strengthening enforcement of its "syariah-friendly dress code" particularly among foreign Muslim tourists.

State tourism, culture, environment and climate change exco Razali Idris highlighted the need for greater monitoring and enforcement, focusing on island destinations such as Redang and Perhentian that attract a large number of international visitors.

"The syariah-friendly dress code starts at all entrances to the state.

"We will also be putting up signboards on the etiquette at all entry points to Terengganu," the Kijal assemblyperson was quoted as saying by Berita Harian after a function at Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, Kuala Terengganu today.

The latest directive follows a state government decision not to enter the women’s gymnastics event in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 due to the issue of non-syariah compliance attire.

Last Wednesday, Ladang assemblyperson Zuraida Md Noor urged the government to strengthen enforcement of syariah in the state as part of efforts to promote a better understanding of appropriate dress code among outsiders.

She cited concerns over the presence of Muslim tourists who defied an existing tourism guideline as they were either unaware or due to weak enforcement.

Commenting further, Razali admitted a lack of effort to educate foreign tourists on the dress code, leading to those among them who dressed provocatively while on holiday in Terengganu islands.

"We are in the process of strengthening (enforcement) and educating Muslim tourists both from Malaysia and overseas to comply with the dressing etiquette," he said.
