Govt moots entertainment tax waiver for local artistes' live shows

BUDGET 2024 | The federal government intends to fully waive the 25 percent entertainment duty for stage performances by local artistes.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced this while tabling Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Stage performances by international artistes and other entertainment events such as film premieres and sporting events will be imposed a reduced 10 percent entertainment duty.

Meanwhile, theme parks, family recreational centres, indoor entertainment centres and simulators will have the entertainment duty reduced to five percent.

Anwar said the federal government is taking this step in line with the Selangor administration’s decision to exempt the entertainment tax until December.

As such, he urged the other state governments to consider reducing entertainment tax to support the development of local creative talents and stimulate tourism in the country.

The government has also proposed setting special income tax rates between zero and 10 percent for film production companies, foreign movie actors and film crews filming in Malaysia.
