Zafrul set to be new BAM president

Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz is set to be the new president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, the sports body said its council unanimously agreed for Zafrul to replace Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

It was previously reported that Norza will step down from the top post at the end of the year.

“The detailed timeline will be discussed internally and announced at the next council meeting in December 2023,” BAM said.

Meanwhile, Norza reportedly said at a press conference today that the BAM council is expecting Zafrul’s election to be held next January.

According to a report by Scoop, Norza asserted that Zafrul is the right candidate to replace him, despite concerns that the technocrat does not have much experience to helm the national badminton body.

He explained that the BAM leadership is not only about the president as it is a “professional body that is governed by council members at the highest level.”

“We have two deputy presidents and a general-secretary who play a role in its governance.

“The president is merely a bridge to stakeholders like the government and sponsors,” he was quoted as saying.
