Michelle Yeoh elected as Olympic committee member

Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian actress to win an Oscar has become an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member after being voted in on the final day of the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old Malaysian, formerly a junior squash champion, was among eight newly elected members.

Xinhua reported that on the Olympic committee, Yeoh will be joined by judoka Yael Arad, who won Israel's first Olympic medal, Hungarian businessman Balasz Furjes, former Olympic volleyball medalist of Peru Cecilia Roxana Tait Villacorta and German entrepreneur Michael Mronz.

All five had been proposed as individual members by the IOC executive board in September.

Swedish International Table Tennis Federation president Petra Sorling and South Korean International Skating Union president Kim Jae-youl were also elected thanks to their function as heads of international federations.

Tunisian Olympic Committee president was elected for a function within the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
