At least 19 journalists killed in Gaza conflict so far, says watchdog

At least 19 journalists have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Gaza as of Oct 18, says the Committee to Protect Journalists.

According to a report by the CPJ, of the 19 journalists who were confirmed dead, there were 15 Palestinians, three Israelis, and one Lebanese.

A further eight were reported injured while three journalists were reported missing or detained, said the CPJ.

Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa programme coordinator, reminded that journalists are civilians doing important work during times of crisis and should not be targeted by warring parties.

“Journalists across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heartbreaking conflict. All parties must take steps to ensure their safety,” he said.

The group said it was unclear whether all of the journalists were covering the conflict at the time of their deaths but that they had been included in the count while investigating the circumstances.

“CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists killed, injured, detained, or missing in the war, including those hurt as hostilities spread to neighbouring Lebanon,” it said.

The journalists are among more than 4,000 dead on both sides since the conflict erupted on Oct 7.
