PARLIAMENT | A shouting match erupted in the august house earlier this morning after Shahidan Kassim (Perikatan Nasional-Arau) accused Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (Pakatan Harapan-Tebrau) of supporting Israel.

Shahidan stood up today to request that the government table a motion for lawmakers to state their stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

“One Palestinian child is dying every 10 minutes. I ask that Parliament make a stand on the matter and not just one person’s voice.

“Take, for example, Tebrau, he stated that he supports Israel. It’s crucial that Parliament makes a stand,” he said.

Shahidan (above, right) claimed that Puah's stance in support of Israel had gone “viral”, but did not elaborate on the matter.

This sparked a shouting match between Puah and Shahidan, as the former demanded the latter to retract his claim.

Several other backbenchers chimed in - demanding Shahidan to retract his claim.

Puah then invoked Standing Order 36(6), which prevents a member of the house from imputing improper motives to any other members.

This prompted Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Alice Lau to demand that Shahidan substantiate his allegations against Puah.

Shahidan only replied that if his claim was untrue, Puah should retract his stance outside of Dewan Rakyat.

“He has gone ‘viral’ (for being) in support of Israel, so he should retract it. If (the claims are) untrue, then good.

“I am not accusing, I’m not the type to do so. You (government leaders) are the ones who like to incessantly accuse.

“But the government itself has to issue a position," he stated.

Shahidan insisted he would only retract his claim if his allegations were untrue, despite Lau telling him on multiple occasions to retract.

The PAS MP eventually retracted his statement.
