Accreditation suspension: Harakah can appeal - Fahmi

Any news organisations that had their government accreditation revoked can file an appeal, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

This includes Harakah - a PAS-owned newspaper - which had its Information Department accreditation cards revoked yesterday.

The cards are needed to access government buildings and access media facilities in Parliament.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur today, Fahmi was unable to disclose why the Information Department did so.

"Surely, they had their reasons to do so. Anyone who is affected by such decisions should appeal," he added.

Asked specifically why action was taken against Harakah, Fahmi said the question should be directed to the Information Department.

A copy of the Information Department letter to Harakah, sighted by Malaysiakini, showed the newspaper was sanctioned over a Nov 6 article titled "Malaysia Di Bawah Anwar Ragu-Ragu Sokong Palestin?" (Is Anwar-led Malaysia’s support for Palestine doubtful?).

The article suggested that the Anwar administration was being led by the West and was accompanied by a photo with an Israeli flag behind Anwar.

In its letter, the Information Department accused Harakah of publishing "unfounded accusations" and ordered that all their media accreditation cards be returned today.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim criticised Harakah in Parliament over the article for attempting to link him to Israel.
