Perak will channel water to Penang

Perak will supply treated water to Penang following a deal reached yesterday, said Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad.

He told reporters in Manjung, Perak, today that a new treatment plant will be established in Kerian, northern Perak.

The new deal will also be beneficial to Perak as it will resolve irrigation issues and supply water for the upcoming High-Tech Park - both in the Kerian area, he said.

“We were working on irrigation issues in northern Perak anyway. Secondly, when the prime minister announced the setting up of a High-Tech Park, it means we need to supply water for industries as well,” he added.

Sungai Muda - which originates from Kedah - supplies 80 percent of Penang’s water needs and the latter state is exploring other water sources.

Perikatan Nasional-led Kedah was looking to charge Penang RM50 million a year to access Sungai Muda’s water.

Sungai Muda’s source is located in Siong, Kedah.
