The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has requested for its roles and responsibilities to be included in the amendment of the Audit Act 1957.

PAC chairperson Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said it was pertinent for the committee to execute its duties in a more established and effective manner.

“I am sure and believe, as per the commitment given by the auditor-general (Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi) to look into and accept suggestions from the attorney-general and the legal adviser.

“I believe if there is an engagement session from time to time, we can discuss it. That would be best to build cooperation in the future,” she said in a joint press conference with the auditor-general at the Parliament today.

Mas Ermieyati (above, centre) added that she was informed that the current government has plans to amend the act next year.

In 2019, then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was reported as saying that the act would be amended to give it “more authority and clout”.

In a separate development, Mas Ermieyati who is also Masjid Tanah MP, said PAC will summon the Finance Ministry to provide an explanation pertaining to the management of the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) on Nov 30.

This comes after Auditor-General's Report 2022 found Lada’s failure to collect land lease proceeds from two projects - St Regis Hotel Langkawi development project of RM3.19 million since 2018 and leasehold land income of RM8.3 million for the Perkampungan Tok Senik Resort project since 2003.

“For the purpose of proceedings for the issues in the AG's report for 2022, PAC will focus on topics that are identified as possessing elements of 3P, which are corruption, abuse of power, and also wastage, as well as one K, which is negligence.

"PAC will inform, from time to time, for other topics for the purpose of proceedings. We have already put together a schedule until the end of December for the issues raised by the auditor-general," she added.
