TI-M urges ministers to show report card

Graft watchdog Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) has urged cabinet ministers to publicise their "report card" on their first year on the job.

In a statement, TI-M president Muhammad Mohan said this was necessary for the public to assess the reforms that had been brought by the current cabinet.

"Ministers need not worry even if their performance is short of the mark as the purpose of the report card is to clarify what has been done and to justify the challenges and complexities of implementation.

"The rakyat deserves to know one way or another," he said.

Muhammad said transparency would send a clear message to the public and the international community that Malaysia was on the right track towards accountability and reforms.

"The Madani government under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim took over the government at a time when the country's economy was in tatters, cost of living rising, ringgit weak against the greenback, and continuous threats by the opposition of an impending government collapse.

"Thus, it is commendable that the unity government, with the support of the various parties, leaders and civil servants, has survived thus far, with minimal reports of in-fighting, friction, washing dirty laundry in public or public drama.

"Yet the question remains: are all the ministers performing well to give that support to the prime minister, and implementing projects to reform the laws and improve the rakyat's lives?" said Muhammad.
