Bersatu man dares Bukit Gantang MP to quit after backing govt

Bukit Gantang MP Syed Hussin Syed Abdul Fasal should quit after voicing support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim so the mandate can be returned to the people, said a Bersatu leader.

Bukit Gantang Bersatu division chief Ahmad Man dared the lawmaker to recontest the seat under a Pakatan Harapan or BN ticket.

“Syed Abu Hussin's support for Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat this morning was a betrayal of the people's trust, as well as of Bersatu, Perikatan Nasional, and the country's democracy.

“The Bukit Gantang Bersatu division vehemently condemns Syed Abu Hussin's 'blanket support' for the prime minister,” Ahmad said in a statement on Facebook today.

In voicing his support during the Prime Minister's Question Time in Parliament, Syed Abu Hussin (above) also called on other opposition MPs to work together with the government.

‘Appaling’ reason

Elaborating on the matter, Ahmad said that as an opposition lawmaker, Syed Abu Hussin should play a “check and balance” role, rather than playing second fiddle to the ruling government.

“The country's democracy will be ruined if all opposition lawmakers voiced their full support for the prime minister, just to get allocations (for their constituencies).

“Syed Abu Hussin's justification that his support is for the rakyat's sake is appalling,” the Kuala Sepetang assemblyperson said, adding that even after six state elections in August, people still supported PN.

Ahmad challenged Syed Abu Hussin to let go of his position if he truly believed that his support for Anwar had the blessings of Bukit Gantang voters.

“He should recontest (the seat) under the Harapan or BN ticket. If the voters really saw his act as being in their interest, then he would definitely win with an even bigger majority.

“But I bet Syed Abu Hussin wouldn’t dare to quit as he knows doing so would cost him his bargaining chip with the government,” Ahmad added.
