Fahmi denies asking X to remove post critical of him

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has denied lodging a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to request social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to remove a post critical of him.

Fahmi said neither he, nor his office, nor his staff has lodged any report on the matter, adding that the MCMC has the power to take any action without consulting him.

"I just want to clarify that MCMC receives reports from anyone; I have not discussed the matter with MCMC, but generally MCMC does not refer to me before taking action, it's free to take action. So sometimes it may be the public who reports it.

"I am not impressed by this message. I have no problem with him saying that, and I and my office did not make a report to MCMC regarding the issue; some accuse as if I (made a report). I confirm that I do not even know, ” Bernama quoted the minister telling reporters after launching the Independent Palestine special edition stamps by Pos Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today.

Fahmi was asked whether the government had allegedly written to X to request the said post by social media user @yindian5, to be taken down, as reported by Malaysiakini.

The post had called Fahmi a "bloody moron" and the prime minister's "lackey".

In a notice to the netizen, the social media platform said that it received a request from the Malaysian government, claiming that the post "violates the laws of Malaysia".

Fahmi's office had earlier denied the report coming from his ministry.
