Muhyiddin, PN leaders disagree with Dr M's remarks on Indians - Lau

Perikatan Nasional leaders do not support Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s assertion that Indian Malaysians are not loyal to the country, said Gerakan president Dominic Lau.

Lau said Gerakan had raised its objection to Mahathir’s statement at the PN supreme council meeting last night.

“PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and other leaders also stated that they do not support Mahathir’s statement,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier in a press conference, he said many PN leaders at the meeting felt that Mahathir’s remarks were “not appropriate”.

He also said the remarks may have been uttered because the former prime minister was “old”.

Mahathir will be turning 99 this July.

Last week, Mahathir claimed that Indian Malaysians are not completely loyal to the country as they still identify with their country of origin and speak Tamil primarily.

He said one should identify as Malay and speak Malay as their primary language to have the right to call the country their own.

Following that, Lau told Malaysiakini that he would raise the matter to the PN meeting this week, and push to censure Mahathir for the inappropriate remarks.

There was no mention of censuring Mahathir in PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin's statement regarding last night’s supreme council meeting.

Mahathir is an adviser to PN in the four states that it governs.

Asked whether PN would remove Mahathir as an adviser, Lau said that it was not discussed.

He also said that Mahathir’s role as an adviser is unrelated to his remarks on Indian loyalty.
