Daim's wife to be charged tomorrow

Na’imah Abdul Khalid, the wife of businessperson Daim Zainuddin, is set to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow.

Her name appeared on the online cause list for cases before judge Azura Alwi tomorrow morning.

However, it is not clear at present what the charge or charges against her will be.

Malaysiakini is attempting to reach out to Na’imah’s legal team for further clarification on the matter.

A source told Malaysiakini that the charge would be framed under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009.

Section 36 (1) generally deals with MACC’s power to obtain information by issuing a notice requiring a person to identify all property held by the person, and failure to comply is an offence under Section 36(2).

The offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to five years and a fine not exceeding RM100,000.

Na’imah came into the limelight during MACC’s investigation into former finance minister Daim, with her telling the media that her husband was persecuted over his success.

She also declared that her family had never made it a secret that it owned assets abroad from “business activities and investments” before Daim’s involvement in politics.

The MACC is investigating Daim over revelations regarding his wealth in the leak of international financial records known as the Pandora Papers.

The leaks found that, in those records alone, Daim’s children, wife, or known business associates jointly held assets worth at least £25 million (about RM141 million).
