UUM don withdraws defamation suit against Yeoh
Yeoh confirmed this in a media statement issued today...
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has withdrawn his defamation suit against Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
Yeoh confirmed this in a media statement issued today.
“I welcome the decision by Kamarul to retract his defamation suit against me for an alleged ‘defamatory’ Facebook post in 2020.
“He has filed a notice of discontinuance in court on Jan 30, with costs in the sum of RM5,000 to be paid to me, without liberty to file afresh,” the Segambut MP said.
Yeoh added that she wants to lay the matter to rest now that Kamarul (above, left) has discontinued the lawsuit.
In September 2020, Kamarul filed a civil action over Yeoh’s Facebook posting and the minister filed her defence against it the following year.
The drama started during the 2020 Sabah state election when Kamarul posted a campaign banner featuring Yeoh and the words “Peranan Umat Kristian Dalam Pembangunan Negara” (Christians and nation-building).
Commenting on the banner, Kamarul allegedly asked: “Using religion to win the state election?”
The DAP lawmaker, in response, accused the lecturer of playing up racial and religious sentiments.
Kamarul then demanded an apology, which Yeoh refused, leading to the lawsuit.
Not the first tussle
This was not the first time Kamarul and Yeoh have locked horns.
In 2017, Kamarul lodged a police report against Yeoh over her personal biography.
He accused Yeoh, who was then the Selangor state assembly speaker, of alleged proselytisation, claiming she was driving a "Christian agenda".
In 2020, he sued five other DAP leaders over comments critical of him after he lodged a police report.
