Ringgit 'drop' to 6.24 against US dollar an error - Bank Negara

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has issued a denial that the ringgit weakened to 6.24 against the US dollar yesterday.

In a statement, the central bank said the figure came about from inaccurate ringgit exchange rate data published by Google.

“Bank Negara Malaysia wishes to address the inaccurate ringgit exchange rate data, including the USD/MYR rate, published by Google on Feb 5.

“For USD/MYR, the exchange rate was misreported on Google as 6.24.

“However, the high and low trading range for USD/MYR recorded in the onshore interbank market for ringgit was between 4.7480 and 4.7630 on Feb 5, as published on the BNM website,” the statement said.

BNM also advised the public to exercise caution and avoid from using unverifiable sources as a reference for ringgit exchange data.

Yesterday, social media was abuzz with news the ringgit had allegedly plunged to a new record low against the US dollar.
