Ramadan bazaars: DBKL to ban traders who sublet licences

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will be cracking down on traders who "rent" their Ramadan bazaar lot permits and trading licences to third parties.

Azman Abidin, the prime minister's political secretary who oversees the Federal Territories, said those caught would be banned from doing business in the capital "forever".

"If we find traders who received licences and then rent it out to third parties, we will immediately seize the licence and they would not be allowed to trade (in Kuala Lumpur) selama-lamanya (forever)," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

In past years there were reports that some traders had sublet their Ramadan bazaar lots and trading licences to third parties for hefty fees.

Azman said DBKL will have a task force to monitor and enforce against this, but admitted that it might be a challenge.

"Sometimes it is hard to determine. Even though they have rented out to others, when we catch them, those caught will say they are working for the licence holders.

"So that is a bit of a problem, how to identify such cases. But we want to ensure it doesn't happen anymore," he added.

Ramadan is expected to begin in the second week of March.
