Chief inspector Azilah Hadri and corporal Sirul Azhar Umar had made certain 'revelations' and agreed to show the police the crime scene, the Shah Alam High Court was told today.

According to Supt Zainol Samah, the 19th witness in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial, he was told of this by investigating officer ASP Tonny Lunggan.

"They agreed to lead the police to the crime scene in Puncak Alam," he said referring to the jungle clearing where the Mongolian national's remains were found.

Objections to this statement were raised by counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin and Hazman Ahmad, who are representing Sirul and Azilah respectively.

Zainol, 42, who is with the Kuala Lumpur police headquarter's special investigations unit, told the court that he gave instructions to arrest Azilah, the first accused, on Nov 1 last year.

He also mentioned that he met Azilah when he was being questioned at the police headquarters after his arrest.

He said that Sirul, the second accused, was formally arrested at his office in the police headquarters after Special Action Squad (UTK) deputy commander Mastor Mohd Ariff brought him back from Pakistan where he was on duty.

Both Azilah and Sirul are members of the police's elite UTK squad.

Wild goose chase

According to the police officer, Azilah was then handed over to the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters for further investigation when he refused to reveal any information when quizzed on the day of his arrest.

He then described how investigating officer Lunggan and Sirul in one car, he (Zainol) in his car and the forensics team in a third car were taken on a wild goose chase in the Puncak Alam area.

Zainol gave a lengthy and detailed description of the turns and bends the three cars took, but had the court in stitches when he suddenly declared: "Tonny (Lunggan) told me that this was not the right place."

Azilah, 31, and Sirul, 36, are charged with the murder which allegedly took place between 10pm on Oct 19 and 1am on Oct 20 last year.

The body of Altantuya was said to be blown up in a jungle clearing in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, 47, is charged with abetting the murder between 9.54am on Oct 18 and 9.45pm on Oct 19 last year in Kuala Lumpur.

All three face the death penalty if convicted. Hearing before justice Mohd Zaki Md Yasin continues tomorrow.
