MCMC seizes MyNewsHub social media operator's phone, SIM card

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recorded the statement of the operator of the MyNewsHub social media account last night.

A mobile phone and SIM card belonging to the suspect were also seized to aid the investigation, the MCMC said in a statement.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the investigation papers will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further instructions.

“To aid the investigation, investigating officers have seized a sim card and a mobile phone belonging to the suspect that was used to upload the video,” it said, referring to a viral video that falsely depicted civil servants in a negative light.

The 1-minute-and-10-seconds long video was titled “Tanya pasal kuarters jer dh kene mcm tu depan KSN!!”, seen as aiming to portray civil servants negatively.

MCMC added that the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment for up to one year.

According to Bernama, the Public Service Department said in a statement yesterday that the clip was an old video of a simulation exercise in response to a provocative attack situation.
