'Lodge complaint if schools hold outdoor activities in heatwave'

Parents were encouraged to complain to the Education Ministry if a school is holding outdoor activities when the weather exceeds 35C in their area.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said complaints should be lodged to ensure appropriate action can be taken.

“The important thing is that the complaint must be made officially so that we can fully investigate whether it has basis or otherwise.

“However, there have been no complaints received on our side regarding the matter so far,” she said.

She was speaking to reporters after attending the Generasi Madani SMKA Student Leaders’ Camp which was attended by 256 students from all over the country in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, yesterday.

Fadhlina said her ministry has also issued guidelines on hot weather that all parties should follow.

It includes not holding activities outside the classroom when the temperature reaches 35C for three consecutive days.

Yesterday, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh reportedly said the respective state education departments and schools across the country had the power to postpone out-of-school activities including cross-country and sports if the temperature exceeds 35C.
