Malaysiakini's 'baby snatching' story shortlisted for Sopa 2024
Malaysiakini’s “Baby Snatching: How Stateless Mums Lose Their Infants in Sabah Hospital” has been shortlisted for the Society of Publishers in Asia (Sopa) 2024 for Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues (Regional).
Now in its 25th year, the prestigious award, recognised globally for its commitment to excellence in reporting, honours outstanding work among global, Chinese-language, and regional media.
Malaysiakini’s “Baby Snatching: How Stateless Mums Lose Their Infants in Sabah Hospital” has been shortlisted for the Society of Publishers in Asia (Sopa) 2024 for Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues (Regional).
Now in its 25th year, the prestigious award, recognised globally for its commitment to excellence in reporting, honours outstanding work among global, Chinese-language, and regional media.
Published on Sept 15 last year by Kini News Lab, the story, authored by Malaysiakini journalist S Vinothaa, revolves around a group of Bajau Laut mothers who lost custody of their children after giving birth at the Lahad Datu Hospital in Sabah.
One of the mothers, Aimah, was accused of leaving her child unattended, leading the hospital to call for the Welfare Department to take the child away after deeming her as an unfit parent.
However, Aimah claimed that she was told to return home after giving birth and leave her premature baby in the neonatal intensive care unit.
The story further documented three similar cases.
Kini News Lab, nestled within Malaysiakini’s newsroom, specialises in data journalism and cutting-edge narrative storytelling.
Indonesian-based Project Multatuli was also listed in the same category for their story entitled “Abortion’s Stigma in Indonesia Keeps Rape Victims from Safe Health Service”.
It featured the story of a 12-year-old victim, Melati, who was pregnant after she was raped by a middle-aged man and told by the police not to abort her foetus as it was a “sin”.
Sopa was founded in Hong Kong in 1982 to encourage best practices in the publishing industry, set a high bar for journalistic standards, and be a voice for press freedom and journalists’ rights in Asia Pacific.
The annual Sopa Awards for Editorial Excellence was established in 1999 to recognise and reward great journalism. The annual awards are highly coveted and have become a highlight of the regional media calendar.
