What went wrong, Johor MB asks over unfinished school repairs after 3 years

Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has questioned why 14 dilapidated schools in the state have yet to be completely repaired despite allocations for such work being approved in 2021.

He made the revelation during his winding-up speech in the Johor state assembly today.

Onn said the aforementioned schools were among 19 in the southern state categorised as dilapidated schools.

“What went wrong? How can such a thing happen, until our children become victims of bureaucracy?

“We need more teachers and new schools in Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang and Kulai,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

In a separate development, Onn pointed out that RM657 million has been channelled to help those in need in Johor and ideally, the state should no longer have any hardcore poor.

He noted that the Johor State Islamic Religious Council received RM388 million in zakat payments while the Social Welfare Department received an allocation of RM269 million.

Statistics showed that the hardcore poor in the state has declined by 39.5 percent – from 4,378 households to 2,647 households, the Machap assemblyperson added.

‘Ensure no water disruption’

The Johor state government will also take stern action against water supply companies and agencies in the state if water supply disruptions recur.

Onn said the disruptions were still happening in several areas, including during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri period in Bukit Permai, Gambir and Layang-Layang.

“The National Water Services Commission (Span), as the supervisory body, must pay serious attention to Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s decree to prevent such shortages.”
