DLP: MCA veep's heart bleeds for Guan Eng battling outside govt

MCA vice-president Wee Jeck Seng is crestfallen that DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng is forced to address the dual language programme (DLP) issue outside of the corridors of power.

According to Wee, this battle would not have the desired outcome.

He found it baffling that Lim had to resort to such a tactic despite DAP having the most number of federal seats in the coalition government and five cabinet ministers.

“This has left the people confused if DAP is part of the government or opposition,” he said in a statement.

Yesterday, Lim reiterated his call for Putrajaya to adopt the practice of the previous Perikatan Nasional and BN governments to respect parental choice in the teaching of the two subjects in English without interference or restrictions.

This followed a dispute between the school boards and Parent-Teacher Associations of 11 secondary schools in Penang and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek over the DLP programme.

Wee also noted that Lim appeared to be praising PN chairperson and former premier Muhyiddin Yassin about this issue.

Why not speak to DAP ministers?

On the same note, he questioned why the former Penang chief minister chose to air his views to the media instead of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“DAP’s Wong Kah Woh serves as the deputy education minister, along with five DAP cabinet ministers, namely Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Housing and Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.

“These ministers could have conveyed and reflected the voice of the Chinese community in the cabinet but they did not. 

“It is sad that party chairperson, who holds no official position, is making statements outside,” he added.

Wee said the Education Ministry mandating that schools must have at least one Science and Mathematics class taught in the national language to adopt the DLP is unreasonable and disrupts the schools’ operations.

He added that despite DAP holding the deputy minister education posts twice, issues concerning Chinese education remain unresolved.

Wee urged DAP ministers and deputy ministers to stop turning a blind eye to the issue and not allow Lim to fight this alone on the outside.

He added that DAP cabinet members must address this issue in the next cabinet meeting.
