Leak forces lawyers to mull 'extra protection' for Zayn's parents

Lawyers representing the parents of autistic boy, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, have not ruled out the possibility of requesting extra police protection for their clients who are now out on bail.

This comes after whistleblower “Edisi Siasat” leaked purported police investigation diary in the case against Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, less than 24 hours after the couple claimed trial in the Sessions Court to negligence which potentially caused physical injury to their child.

Fahmi Abd Moin appeared for Zaim while Mahmud Jumaat acted for Ismanira.

“So far we are monitoring the situation, and if things become serious with possibilities of danger to my client, I will discuss (further) with my client,” Fahmi (above, left) told Malaysiakini.

“Could be, could be,” he said when asked about the possible need for added police protection, given the high-profile nature of the case.

When contacted, Mahmud said he would similarly consider requesting added protection for Ismanira.

“I’m not just worried about her (physical) safety, but also mental pressure.

“She is being shamed in such a manner, when we don’t even know the authenticity of the (leaked) investigation papers,” he told Malaysiakini.

Charged with neglect

Mahmud said he is also of the view that any speculations made on the case after his client has been charged could possibly be in contempt of court or sub judice.

According to the charges, the couple were jointly accused of neglecting their six-year-old son Zayn, potentially causing him physical injury.

The offence allegedly took place around Jalan PJU Damansara Damai between 12pm on Dec 5 and 9.55pm on Dec 6.

The charges were brought under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the same law, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both. 

They were initially detained around Puncak Alam, Selangor on May 31, and remanded for 13 days from June 1 to assist in a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
