PKR MP urges Dewan Rakyat speaker to vacate 6 Bersatu seats

PKR MP Hassan Abdul Karim has urged Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul to declare six seats held by rogue Bersatu MPs vacant.

The Pasir Gudang lawmaker said the decision must be made to respect the constitution of political parties legally registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

"I suggest the speaker (Johari) to vacate the six parliamentary seats of Bersatu MPs.

“That is in line with the notice sent by Bersatu chief whip Ronald Kiandee after the membership of the six parliamentarians got terminated.

"I believe the right thing to do is that the six seats should be vacated on grounds that the speaker needs to respect the Federal Constitution which has been amended to enact the anti-party hopping law," Hassan (above) said.

Commenting further, Hassan said the speaker's failure to do so would give the impression that the latter was disrespecting not only Bersatu’s constitutional amendment but also the DAP, Amanah and Umno - which also made similar amendments.

"Johari should make decisions based on the (Federal) Constitution and (also) respect Bersatu's constitution," he stressed.

Bersatu previously submitted a notice to the speaker requesting that the six parliamentary seats held by its representatives be vacated.

In a media statement, Ronald who is also Bersatu vice president, said that the party membership of the six MPs who previously supported Anwar had ceased immediately.

"Thus, as per Article 49A of the Federal Constitution (paragraph 3), the Dewan Rakyat speaker must ensure that there is an emergency vacancy within 21 days after the notice is received," said Ronald.

MPs betrayed voters

Commenting further, Hassan said that he believed the government would not interfere in court affairs if the matter was brought there.

"I ask as promised by the prime minister (Anwar Ibrahim). that his government does not interfere in court affairs.”

He added that the government will not fall without the support of the six MPs.

"The government does not need the support of parliamentarians who betray their own party.

"These six people not only betrayed PN, they betrayed voters in six parliamentary constituencies," he said.
