Following news of the passing of PKR founding member and former deputy president Syed Husin Ali, prominent leaders have expressed their heartfelt tributes and condolences, a testament to the profound impact the man has had on many lives.

PKR secretary-general Saifudin Nasution Ismail conveyed his deep condolences, emphasising that the party has lost a highly respected figure.

“He was known for his discipline, consistently adhering to decisions made in meetings regardless of his personal stance,” Saifudin shared in an Instagram post.

Saifudin, who is also the home minister, said he sought Syed Husin’s wisdom and experience on numerous occasions.

“Syed Husin’s final responsibility in the party was chairing the appeals committee for members seeking to rejoin after dismissal or departure,” he added.

Syed Husin passed away early today at the age of 87. His death was announced by PKR representative and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil via Facebook.

Former PKR leader Tian Chua echoed the sentiment, describing the veteran politician’s passing as “the giant has fallen”.

Chua expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Syed Husin for over 30 years, highlighting his dedication to progressive nationalism, inclusivity, and fair wealth distribution.

In an Instagram post, Chua also noted Syed Husin’s commitment to international solidarity and anti-imperialist struggles.

“He was also passionately committed to international solidarity and anti-imperialist struggle,” he said.

PAS secretary-general Takiyudin Hassan issued a media statement expressing condolences on behalf of the party, describing Syed Husin as an outstanding role model.

“With heavy hearts, we accepted his passing this morning.

“He is a patriot who always prioritised the interests of the people and the nation over any other interests,” the statement read.

PSM’s S Arutchelvan also extended condolences on behalf of the party, emphasising that Syed Husin’s dedication as an activist, academic, leftist fighter, and advocate for the common people will always be remembered.

“He could bring moderate politics yet remained firm in his principles,” he told Malaysiakini.
