Sanusi: Probe 'tokong' of football remark for 3R if aimed at S'gor ruler

A controversial remark about there being a “tokong” of Malaysian football should be investigated if it was aimed at a ruler, said Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Sanusi said this when asked to comment on the matter.

“Did that person mean the ‘tokong’ was the sultan of Selangor? If yes, then he should be investigated for 3R (race, religion, royalty),” he told reporters in Sungai Bakap today.

Neither Sanusi nor the reporter who quizzed him mentioned who made the tokong remark.

However, it is a clear reference to a social media post by Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

On Thursday night, Tunku Ismail lamented how the Malaysian Football League had U-turned on a fine and point penalty against Selangor FC for not showing up for a charity football match against the Johor royal’s football club JDT.

Selangor had skipped the match after several attacks on team members. A request to postpone the match was rejected.

After a stern reprimand from the Selangor sultan, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) reduced the fine against Selangor FC from RM100,000 to RM60,000 and cancelled the deduction of three points in the 2024-2025 Super League.

‘Real tokong of M’sian football’

Tunku Ismail lamented that teams that had done something wrong could now get their respective state sultans to intervene.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the real ‘tokong’ of Malaysian football,” he said at the end of his post.

However, it is not clear who he was referring to.

Two days ago, Sanusi had backed Selangor FC saying that the majority of Malaysians are behind the Red Giants over the dispute.

Sanusi and Tunku Ismail have traded barbs in the past over football.

In 2021, Sanusi went back and forth with the JDT owner regarding the issue of salary arrears involving the Kedah Darul Aman FC (KDA FC) team.

This follows Tunku Ismail’s apparent criticism of KDA’s management and his labelling of Sanusi as a “pistol head”.
