Stop making fools of yourselves, deputy speaker chastises MPs

PARLIAMENT | Following frequent disruptions in the Dewan Rakyat, deputy speaker Ramli Md Nor has reminded MPs not to make a fool of themselves in public.

He urged both government and opposition MPs to maintain their integrity by debating maturely.

Ramli expressed regret that there are still some MPs who fail to do so instead of making the most of the platform given to them.

“I believe you are all well aware that integrity is not just about corruption but also about how we speak and debate.

“In my view, we are all adults; let us not make a fool of ourselves in public. This applies to both the opposition and the government,” he said.

Ramli gave the advice before commencing the debate on amendments to the Limited Liability Partnerships Act 2012.

Raucous environment

Before the Cameron Highlands MP chaired the parliamentary session, there were several instances where the proceedings descended into chaos.

Earlier, PAS MP Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN-Pendang) alleged that DAP leaders had applied to acquire land in Kelantan sparked a strong rebuke from DAP parliamentarians.

RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) called Awang’s claim a lie and challenged him to reveal the names of the DAP leaders.

The commotion lasted for several minutes, forcing deputy speaker Alice Lau to intervene.

The uproar occurred while Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) M Kulasegaran was delivering his winding-up speech on the Audit (Amendment) Bill 2024.

Rayer had earlier asked Lau to take note of two opposition MPs, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) and Khlir Mohd Nor (PN-Ketereh), accusing them of disrupting his debate yesterday.

Rayer’s action prompted a response from Awang, leading to another commotion.

Ramli also reminded MPs to follow the rules if they do not want to face stern action.

“I will handle it according to the rules. If anyone is stubborn, I do not care.

“Here, I carry out my duties. Outside, we are friends,” Ramli said.
