Perak wants ministry to provide non-radioactive rare earth mining criteria

The Perak state government is asking the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry to determine the eligibility criteria and conditions for a company to carry out non-radioactive rare earth element (NR-REE) mining activities.

Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad said this is because the state government has received applications from several local companies interested in mining in Mukim Kenering, Hulu Perak.

“We have to make sure that they will comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP). So the related companies must have expertise in NR-REE mining.

“The second is that companies (which are interested in engaging in mining activities in Hulu Perak) must have strong financial resources as the mining activity of the mineral material requires a large expenditure,” he said.

He told reporters at a press conference after attending the 2024 Fifth State Government Customer Meeting Day programme at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building on Wednesday.

Earlier, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the ministry would present a paper to the National Economic Action Council regarding the existence of rare earth elements in the country for exploration.

He also said that several companies have shown interest in processing NR-REE elements in Mukim Kenering, Hulu Perak, but it is still in discussion.
