Veteran unionist Zainal Rampak dies

Veteran unionist Zainal Rampak passed away this morning, Malaysian Trades Union Congress secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor announced.

The late Zainal served as the president of the MTUC from 1986 to 2004 and also served two terms as a member of the Dewan Negara.

He was awarded the Darjah Panglima Setia Mahkota in 2012 which carries the title Tan Sri.

“Zainal Rampak has left a deep impression in the world of trade unions in Malaysia and the region, fighting for the rights and interests of workers with dedication and passion that never faded.

“At the international level, he is also remembered for his contribution as a member of the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) from 2000 to 2004.

“In addition, he also held the position of secretary-general of the Transport Workers Union from 1994 to the present, and secretary-general of the Asean Trade Union Council from 1996 to 2004.

“His leadership went beyond national borders when he was appointed as the chairperson of the International Transport Workers Federation for the region Asia Pacific from 2001 to 2009,” said Kamarul.

The late Zainal was also associated with party politics and was at various times a member of the Labour Party of Malaya, Semangat 46, DAP and Umno.

Kamarul said that Zainal’s passing was a great loss for the trade union movement.

“His contribution will continue to be remembered and appreciated by all who knew him.

“We offer our condolences to Zainal’s family as well as his friends and acquaintances during this difficult period,” he added.
