Suspect surrenders after media worker's sexual harassment complaint

The suspect of a sexual harassment case in Sungai Bakap, Penang, has surrendered himself to the police and has been remanded to assist investigations.

According to Bernama, Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad said the suspect turned himself in at the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters.

“The man is currently remanded for two days for further investigation into the case, and the police guarantee that a detailed and transparent investigation will be conducted,” he reportedly told the national news agency.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported on a police report lodged by a media worker claiming she was sexually harassed by a person believed to be a member of Pakatan Harapan’s media entourage.

The incident purportedly occurred when the journalist and other media practitioners were doorstopping Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at a campaign event in Sungai Kecil, Penang last night.

Several media groups urged the authorities and the suspect’s employer to take stern action, while Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail assured a thorough police investigation.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil condemned the incident.

“The perpetrators must be brought to justice immediately. Such incidents should never happen at all,” he said.

He said he has received further information on the incident from the journalist involved, and thanked the police for assuring a thorough and transparent investigation.
