PM vows action if govt machinery used for election campaigns

PARLIAMENT | If there is proof of ministers or public officials using government machinery for election campaigns, disciplinary action will be taken against them, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

However, the Tambun MP drew a distinction between government machinery being used before and after the nomination day of elections.

“I agree that as soon as nomination day occurs, (government machinery) cannot be used.

“If we receive proof (of it happening), we will certainly take the appropriate actions and I am not wavering in this,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.

This was due to a cabinet decision on the matter, he said.

During the recent Sungai Bakap by-election, Bersih lodged a report to the MACC over the plan to build two senior citizen centres and a Tamil school in the state constituency.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the projects during the election campaign, which Bersih communication director Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar said was problematic as it was based on the condition of the government winning.

Asraf said it violated Section 10 of the Election Offences Act whereby any announcement made must not come with any conditions.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari accused the BN chairperson of “blatant bribery” and labelled the act as a desperate attempt by the ruling coalition to appeal to voters in the state constituency.
