DAP rep calls for investigation into River of Life project

PARLIAMENT | Syahredzan Johan (Harapan-Bangi) has called for an investigation into the failed River of Life (ROL) project.

During today’s parliamentary debate on the Auditor-General’s Report, Syahredzan said the report was a red flag signalling that the project should be investigated.

“I'm not saying there is a criminal offence but such failures signal a red flag to at least start an investigation. If everything is in order, great,” he said.

According to the report, despite spending nearly RM4 billion since 2011, the project is unlikely to be completed this year and has not met its objectives.

The auditors also found that various infrastructures had broken down and delays in several projects exceeded eight years, escalating government costs.

Project should continue

Syahredzan urged the government to take the failure seriously and find out why it happened in the first place.

In addition, he suggested that the government use the project’s completed facilities instead of turning them into monuments to such a failed project.

“I am truly disappointed to see this project fail because, in my opinion, its intention was very good, which is to beautify and clean the river in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Therefore, echoing Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin), Syahredzan said the project needs to continue.

“I agree with Tampin’s point because I believe this project should be continued after the government addresses the existing weaknesses,” he added.

Earlier, Isam pointed out that the ROL was performing up to expectations until 2018 and was even listed as one of the world’s best waterfront districts.

“The water quality was improving and becoming clearer, and even the lamps looked better.

“It is unfair to say that the ROL project lacks a comprehensive business model.

“If the business model wasn’t good, how could the place attract tourists and become a must-visit destination in KL? I request a proper explanation to avoid any confusion among the public,” he said.

Isam added that the government should make the necessary improvements to the project and turn it into a tourist destination.
