Papagomo arrested after attending sedition trial

Blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, known as Papagomo, has been detained by the police right after he attended a sedition court trial today.

In a media statement, counsel Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali confirmed that the police picked up his client at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex in Jalan Duta around midday.

"After attending the second day of trial in relation to Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 (involving an allegation that the government is pro-Israel and pro-West), two police officers from Bukit Aman's Classified Crime Investigation Unit arrested Azri (above) outside the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur.

"They are on their way to Dang Wangi district police station. The arrest was on the orders from higher-ups. It is over a police report under the Sedition Act.

"Today's government is truly abusing power," the lawyer claimed.

When contacted, Rafique said he was uncertain which specific alleged offence his client was being investigated for.

The counsel added that the remand hearing before a magistrate would be conducted tomorrow.

Earlier today, Azri attended the second day of his sedition trial over an alleged Facebook post claiming that the government was pro-Israel and pro-West.

The former Umno Youth executive council member is also facing a separate sedition court case linked to the issue of socks bearing the word Allah.
