Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party will announce its candidate for the Nenggiri by-election earlier as they have identified one of the three candidates shortlisted by its Kelantan chapter.

“The political bureau has decided and we are submitting the name (of the selected candidate) to Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (Kelantan Umno chief) to make a preliminary announcement,” he told reporters after officiating the Kuala Nerus Umno division delegates meeting today.

While saying that the identified candidate was a man, Zahid stressed that he would leave it to Jazlan to determine when the candidate’s name would be announced.

Yesterday, Jazlan said his party proposed to announce the candidate for the Nenggiri state by-election earlier to give the candidate space to meet voters in the area.

On June 19, Kelantan state assembly speaker Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah announced the vacancy of the Nenggiri seat after its incumbent Mohd Azizi Abu Naim was removed from Bersatu for supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Election Commission has set the Nenggiri by-election polling day on Aug 17, while nomination and early voting have been set for Aug 3 and 13, respectively.
