PARLIAMENT | Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil warned social media users against committing cyberbullying, saying that their offensive act is traceable.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat this morning, he said there is a misguided belief among netizens that they could get away with offensive comments by doing it during live streams.

"This is a warning to all. Some people think they can just leave whatever comments they want on a live stream, believing that the remarks will be gone when the live session ends. That is a misconception.

"I want to inform here that the Communications and Multimedia Commission and police have acquired cooperation from social media platforms to identify users who leave (offensive) comments, including those made during live streams," Fahmi said during Minister's Question Time at the Parliament.

The minister was answering a question on cyberbullying posed by Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas).

In response to a related question posed by R Yuneswaran (Harapan-Segamat), Fahmi said TikTok has also agreed to increase its monitoring of content and live sessions on the platform.

This followed a recent cyberbullying incident that led to the death of social media influencer Rajeswary Appahu, better known as Esha.

According to Fahmi, information he received showed that Esha was cyberbullied during a live stream session between 3am and 4am.

"Indeed, the mode of monitoring also has to change.

"In a discussion with TikTok recently, the platform informed me that they took the incident very seriously and have since increased the number of moderators to monitor contents and live sessions in vernacular languages, including Tamil," he said.

Esha, an influencer, was found dead on July 5, just one day after filing a police report regarding criminal threats and defamation on social media against her.
