Cops nab Orang Asli over 'offensive' video against deputy speaker

Police have picked up an Orang Asli in Negeri Sembilan over an alleged offensive video against Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Mohd Nor, according to an activist.

Zurdi Baharu told Malaysiakini that the man, who is from the Semelai tribe, was detained at his house in Kuala Pilah about 11pm last night.

He said the 48-year-old was then taken to the Sentul police station in Kuala Lumpur where he has since been kept.

“He was arrested by police and taken to the Sentul police station about 11pm last night.

“Based on information furnished by his wife just now, he is still being detained at the police station,” he said in a text message at about 8.40pm today.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Sentul district police chief Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari for confirmation and comments.

According to Zurdi, the suspect was the subject of Ramli’s police report on Tuesday, where the deputy speaker accused the Orang Asli of defaming him through at least two videos uploaded on TikTok last week.

Ramli had lodged the report at Sentul police station under Sections 504 and 505(c) of the Penal Code.

The two provisions criminalise intentional insults that provoke a breach of peace and statements conducing to public mischief with intent to incite.

Following this, Zurdi yesterday urged the Cameron Highlands MP, who is also an Orang Asli, to be more courteous towards his own kind.

Remanded till Sunday

When contacted, Sentul district police chief Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari confirmed the arrest.

He said the suspect is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

“He is being remanded until July 21 (Sunday) to facilitate the investigation,” Sukarno told Malaysiakini.
