Global internet outage disrupts multiple sectors

Airlines, banks, media outlets, hospitals, and other key institutions were affected by a mass cyber outage, according to multiple media reports on X.

“Global cyber outage: Cybersecurity platform CrowdStrike is down worldwide, causing global IT problems, disruptions in international airlines, banks, and media outlets,” reported Sputnik.

CrowdStrike Holdings Inc is a US-based cybersecurity technology company.

BBC reported that the mass IT outage grounded planes and affected banks, broadcasters, and businesses around the world.

Bloomberg reported that a series of technical glitches, triggered by a reported Microsoft outage, is disrupting services globally, affecting sectors ranging from airlines to banking.

Anadolu Agency reported that hospitals and health services have been impacted by server failures, with the Israeli Health Ministry confirming the disruptions.

In Australia, Al Jazeera reported a major IT outage affecting banks, telecoms, media outlets, and airlines.

Also in Australia, Melbourne Airport on X said it is experiencing a global technology issue which is impacting check-in procedures for some airlines.

US-based Frontier Airlines reported the impact of the Microsoft outage on their systems, affecting booking, check-in, access to boarding passes, and some flights.

Bursa, KTM report outages

Meanwhile, according to Bursa Malaysia, all FTSE indices and the FBM KLCI index value feed experienced service disruption after the lunch break today.

The local exchange operator said it was investigating the matter.

As of 3.21pm, Bursa said the indices and value feed have resumed.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) confirmed that its KTMB Integrated Ticketing System (Kits) and all customer service channels were affected by the global outage.

It said on Facebook today that restoration works to rectify the technical disruptions are underway.

“KTMB apologises for any inconvenience caused. Thank you for your attention,” it said, adding that mobile app users should restart their phones to regain access to Kits.

On local air travel providers, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) services were reportedly unaffected by the global outage.

Local airline AirAsia said while it is experiencing an in-house system outage, there were no flight cancellations.

Similarly, it is understood that Malaysia Airlines is not affected.

While there seem to be no cancellations as of now, flights to destinations that have been affected by the global outage could affect Malaysia Airlines flights.
