'Bullied to death': Let my daughter be the last, Esha's mum says

The mother of a social media influencer whose death was linked to cyberbullying said her daughter’s case should be the last.

“Let my daughter be the last victim of cyberbullying. No other family should go through what we have been through,” New Straits Times reported R Puspa as saying.

Her daughter Rajeswary Appahu, popularly known as Esha, was found dead on July 5, a day after she lodged a police report in Kuala Lumpur over threats received online.

The case caught widespread attention, with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil vowing action.

Two individuals were charged in court over comments they posted online including the owner of a welfare home Shalini Periasamy, 35, who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. She was fined RM100.

The other accused, B Sathiskumar, 44, pleaded guilty to one charge but claimed trial to another.

Govt’s efforts lauded

Puspa welcomed the government’s efforts to stem cybercrimes, adding it was timely.

She also urged the authorities to put pressure on social media operators.

“They (platform operators) must also take responsibility for the things that take place on their platforms.

“They wash their hands off (the problems), like what they seem to have done during my daughter’s (experience)... this should not happen again.

“I’m grateful for the commitment shown by the government, NGOs and others to ensure such cases do not recur,” she added.
