Chegubard arrested for exposing alleged graft by navy official – lawyer

Bersatu information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard, was arrested at 3pm today.

He is being investigated under Section 203A of the Penal Code, Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, his lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali said in a statement.

"The investigation is related to Chegubard's revelation of alleged corruption and bribery involving a navy official.

“And the police confirmed that the remand application will be made at the Magistrate’s Court in Putrajaya tomorrow at 9am,” he added.

On July 26, Chegubard said that a group of police officers had visited his residence to request him to present himself at the Putrajaya district police headquarters.

"Supposedly because I disclosed a confidential report related to corruption. The secret document label apparently ‘protects' corruption.

"The threat of being arrested is related to the posting of confidential documents involving corruption,” he said on Facebook.

Earlier on July 22, he posted on Facebook about a confidential document he claimed to have received on July 15.

The document was addressed to Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the MACC, and was signed by the navy chief Abdul Rahman Ayob.

It allegedly contained complaints about a candidate who is “a certain party’s favourite” to replace Rahman, who will be retiring soon.

Chegubard claimed that the document showed how the individual was involved in several corruption cases, including an RM45 million acquisition deal.

“MACC investigation paper also stated that the person is “clearly irresponsible, dishonest and untrustworthy.

"Imagine having this corrupt individual becoming the chief of the navy in a situation where the South China Sea is facing crisis and conflict,” he said.

Later, on July 24, Chegubard claimed that he had received threats over his exposure. The Bersatu leader then said he had handed over all related documents to Public Accounts Committee chairperson Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
