Chia-Soh advance to semis, Zii Jia reaches quarter-finals

National men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik defeated India’s former world number one Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty to reach the Paris Olympics semi-finals.

The Malaysian duo previously clinched the bronze medal in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Chia-Soh fought back strongly after losing the first set to force the game to a rubber set, winning with a score of 13-21, 21-14, and 21-16.

Tonight’s victory ended their streak of three consecutive defeats to Satwiksairaj-Chirag, and they now stand a chance to repeat or better their previous bronze medal achievement.

The pair follows national women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan who earlier today defeated South Korea’s world number 10 Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong to reach the semi-final stage.

Chia-Soh will next meet top seeds Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang of China, who defeated Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto of Indonesia 24-22, 22-20, in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Zii Jia also wins

National shuttler Lee Zii Jia stormed into the Paris Olympics men’s badminton singles quarter-finals after defeating France’s Toma Junior Popov in the round of 16.

The former All England champion defeated world number 20 Popov with a score of 21-13 and 24-22.

Lee’s victory against Popov is the third for Malaysia in badminton today after earlier wins by women’s doubles Tan-Thinaah and men’s doubles Chia-Soh.
