Umno state assemblyperson for Mahkota Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, has passed away at the Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Kluang Hospital in Johor.

Her death was announced by Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi who expressed his condolences in a Facebook post this afternoon.

"The loss of Ummi, as she is fondly known, is deeply felt because she was a much-loved and approachable leader.

"Her contributions to Johor and the constituency of Mahkota will not be forgotten," he said.

Initially, it was reported that Sharifah (above) was hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit for internal bleeding and in critical condition.

However, her youngest daughter Nadia Abu Bakar told Malaysiakini later that her mother was in stable condition.

“We brought mum to the hospital yesterday because she was having breathing difficulties.

“It was not due to internal bleeding or organ failure,” she had said.

Malaysiakini has learnt that her remains will be laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery in Kluang after Asar prayers.

Sharifah, who was the Kluang Wanita Umno chief, had previously helmed the position of Johor Wanita Umno chief.

She secured the Mahkota seat in the 2022 state election.

Previously, she served as the Penawar assemblyperson from 2018 to 2022.
