'All settled', Hamzah says over PN 'storm in teacup'

The Perikatan Nasional top leadership appears to have successfully brokered peace between Gerakan and PAS, which had been at loggerheads over the issue of brewery donations to vernacular schools.

In a cryptic Facebook post this afternoon, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said "everything has been settled" through discussion.

"Storm in a teacup is normal in family issues.

"Everything has been settled through a discussion among 'adik-beradik' (siblings)," he said in the post, which was accompanied by a photo of PN component parties’ top leaders sitting together.

They were Gerakan president Dominic Lau, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Malaysian Indian People Party president SP Punithan, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, and Hamzah.

About a week ago, Gerakan was reported to have concurred with DAP’s view of supporting fundraising events sponsored by breweries.

Disappointed with the stance, PAS then lambasted their partner, with its information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari indicating the possibility of the Islamist party not maintaining their alliance with Gerakan for the 16th general election.

Following this, Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong called out PAS by saying that it should not act like the "taikor (big brother) and demand compliance from all other parties".

He also made a threat, saying that Gerakan would not stay in a coalition if it is forced to accept extremely conservative and unreasonable demands of a "particular party".

In response to the remarks, top PAS leaders dared Gerakan to withdraw from the coalition.

The fallout had caused an internal polemic within PN and saw several Bersatu leaders trying to cool the heat.
