Quit lobbying for Mahkota through media, Mat Sabu tells Amanah

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu has rapped his party members for using the media to lobby for the recently vacated Mahkota state seat in Johor.

He said the party should focus on Nenggiri, where Umno is looking to win the seat back from Bersatu.

"I stress that demands for the Mahkota seat need not be discussed through the media as the top leadership of the unity government has not discussed this issue.

"I urge all in the unity government, especially Amanah members, to give their full focus on the Nenggiri by-election which is being contested now," he said in a statement last night.

Mohamad (above) added that Amanah was committed to strengthening unity between members of the coalition government.

The Mahkota seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent from Umno, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, last week.

In the 2022 Johor state election, Amanah’s Muhammad Taqiuddin Cheman failed to defend the seat for Pakatan Harapan in a four-cornered contest against Sharifah, Perikatan Nasional and Warisan.

Despite this, Kluang Amanah yesterday began publicly lobbying for the Mahkota seat, despite pushback from ally DAP which argued that Umno should get the seat as its incumbent.
