A 14-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly posing as a staff member of Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor and wanting to “help perform a surgery” in the operating theatre.
Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof today confirmed receiving a report filed by a hospital staffer, who sighted the unknown teenager’s presence in the operating room, at 1pm yesterday.
“At about 8.30am today, the hospital identified the girl as the same individual who attempted to register at the counter using a fake identity.
“The hospital immediately contacted the police and the arrest was made at the hospital lobby at approximately 9am,” Wan Kamarul said in a statement this evening.
The authorities also confiscated a scrub suit, scrub trousers and a hospital lanyard from the suspect.
Further, Wan Kamarul said the police opened investigations under Sections 448 and 170 of the Penal Code for trespassing and for impersonating a civil servant respectively.
Section 448 provides for a maximum jail term of three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 or both while Section 170 carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison or fine or both.
It is understood that the suspect will be remanded tomorrow.
Wan Kamarul also advised the public against speculating or spreading fake news about the incident.
In a separate statement, the Health Ministry acknowledged the incident, saying the hospital’s quick action succeeded in detecting the suspicious individual.
“The case is still under investigation and the ministry will provide our full cooperation to help the police,” it said.
