'Final' extension for Dr M's sons to declare assets

Mirzan Mahathir and his brother Mokhzani have until mid-September to declare their assets, failing which, the pair can face action.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said this is the final one-month extension given to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons.

“That will be final. If they fail to comply, MACC will take legal action,” he was quoted as telling the media in Kuala Lumpur.

In May, Mirzan (above, right) and Mokhzani were granted another extension, the duration of which was not disclosed.

At the time, Azam and the brothers’ lawyers were in contact with MACC investigating officers regarding the asset declaration period.

“We have already set the deadline for them to declare their assets. We have reached an agreement on that matter,” he said.

On Jan 18, Mirzan and Mokhzani were served with a notice under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009, requiring them to declare all movable and immovable assets in their possession.

The following month, the brothers issued a media statement appealing for patience and understanding for their “impossible endeavour” of collating 43 years’ worth of information.

On May 24, it was reported that Mirzan and Mokhzani applied to MACC to extend the deadline for the duo to declare their assets after being granted an extension earlier.

It was also reported that Mokhzani is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

In April, Azam also confirmed that Mahathir, who has accused Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of targeting his family and associates, is under investigation as well but declined to divulge additional details.

The 99-year-old politician also made it clear that he has no qualms about declaring his assets.

No notice yet

When contacted by Malaysiakini, Mirzan and Mokhzani’s counsel Nizamuddin Abdul Hamid said the MACC has not formally informed them of the extension.

The lawyer said they only heard about it from Azam’s media statement.

“We have not received any (official notification of) specific extension today.

“We will follow up with MACC and await their notification as well,” the counsel added.
