Puteri Umno urges wing's age limit to be increased from 35 to 40

UMNO AGM | Puteri Umno has urged the age limit for the wing membership to be raised from 35 to 40 to ensure its continuity.

Its executive council member Siti Nor Hasyyati Abd Rahman said the change is needed because 153 Puteri Umno division chiefs nationwide will surpass the 35 years age cap soon.

"Allow me to present the voice of Puteri (Umno), which decided during the wing's general assembly on Aug 22, for the age limit to be upped to 40 years from the current 35 years.

"Our plea is significant, because our presence (in Puteri Umno) is not for positions alone, but to serve (the people) and ensure the survival of the Puteri (Umno) wing," she said while debating the party president's policy speech at the Umno general assembly at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Yesterday, Puteri Umno chief Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi proposed the age limit for the wing to be raised to 40.

Lower entry age instead

However, Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad later dismissed the possibility during her speech.

Instead, she said there is a possibility of lowering the membership age of Puteri Umno to 16 years from the current 18 years.

"There is no need to raise (the age limit) to 40 years. (Most people) have children at that age. Then they will end up going for programmes with their children.

"The reason for the establishment of Puteri Umno was we did not want to go to programmes with our mothers," she quipped.

Meanwhile, Hasyyati said that if the age limit is not raised, about 80 percent of Puteri Umno leaders will leave the wing in less than a term.

This would be a waste as the wing has produced some excellent leaders, such as Noraini herself and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said, she added.
