Verdict on Peter Anthony's final appeal set for Nov 27

The Court of Appeal will, on Nov 27, deliver its final appeal decision on former Sabah infrastructure development minister Peter Anthony’s bid to quash his conviction and sentence for falsifying documents related to a maintenance and service contract at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin informed Bernama of the date when contacted today. Peter’s lawyer, Nicholas Kow Eng Chuan, also confirmed the date.

On Aug 1, the involved parties completed their submissions before a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal comprising Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Mohamed Zaini Mazlan, and Azmi Ariffin.

This marks Peter’s final appeal after the High Court on April 18 last year dismissed his appeal to set aside the conviction and the three-year prison sentence and RM50,000 fine imposed by the Sessions Court on May 26, 2022.

However, the Melalap assemblyperson has already paid the fine.

Peter, as managing director of Asli Jati Sdn Bhd, was accused of falsifying a letter from the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UMS dated June 9, 2014, by including false statements with the intent to deceive.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Office of the Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Perdana Putra building, Putrajaya, between June 13 and Aug 21, 2014.

The offence, under Section 468 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment and a fine.
