Muslim DAP leaders challenged to report ‘Welcome to Afganu’ image

A PAS grassroots leader today challenged DAP leaders, particularly those of the Islamic faith, to also lodge police reports over a social media image depicting a person diving into a pool while wearing a black burqa.

Terengganu PAS Youth information chief Muhammad Irsyad Syafiq Burhanuddin said the post was not just an issue concerning the Islamist party.

Instead, he said, it was a larger issue involving sensitivities surrounding the 3Rs of race, religion, and royalty.

“DAP has members who are Muslims and there are DAP elected representatives who are Muslims as well, so I feel that if DAP wants to file a police report too, we very much welcome it.

“This is no longer a political party issue but a matter of solidarity for religion and touches on the 3R issue that has been championed together with the unity government,” Irsyad told reporters when met at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters in Kuala Terengganu today.

Earlier, Terengganu PAS Youth lodged a police report regarding the Facebook post, which was deemed to insult Islam.

The AI-generated image was accompanied by the caption “Welcome to Afganu”.

It is believed to satirise the controversy surrounding the participation of two female divers who represented Terengganu at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, which had just concluded.

Home minister should step in

Commenting further, Irsyad said his party also called for Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to intervene.

He said the authorities should use Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to prosecute those responsible.

“Imagine if our mothers were portrayed in such a manner. I feel it is very disrespectful.

“We can no longer tolerate such nonsense,” he said.

During the recent Sukma tournament, the participation of the two female athletes drew attention amid the state government’s earlier ban due to the non-syariah-compliant attire used for the sport.

Despite the controversy, the two athletes, Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf and Ilyssa Ixora Imran, managed to win bronze in the women’s 10m synchronised platform category.

Uzlifatil also won bronze in the 1m springboard category.
